Driving around town one night I noticed a new Mercedes Benz with it's signature Mercedes star on the front. Only this time the star was illuminated! This sparked the idea to make one for my Toyota Tacoma.
This was a tough one because the Toyota logo does not sit perfectly flat but instead has a ellipsoid back shape. I gathered some initial rough measurements and then used Fusion 360 to model the logo. After some trial and error 3D printing I found a shape that sat snuggly in place.
Using some high density LED strip lights I cut up and soldered them together to make the Toyota logo shape. In this project I decided to use clear and black PETG plastic. PETG can be 3D printed relatively easily and provided the heat resistivity needed for the outdoors here in Wisconsin.
The LED's were secured in place using clear flex glue. The flex glue additionally provided the necessary waterproofing for driving in the rain.
As seen in the picture, the logo appears to be a warmer hue than the DRL in the headlights. To fix this I'd like to experiment with resin printing to see if I can get that brighter, colder hue to match the headlights.
